Another week, another episode of Mobbed Up created. In this episode, Donny and Coffee Guy appear to make amends after consecutive episodes of painful banter and mindless assaults on each other’s character. The delicious Sausage Frittata spoke for itself, and appears to have taken the words out of the mouths of the two biggest egos in the Greater Austin area.
Last week, Chef Donny Delicious whipped up some simple yet delicious lettuce-wrapped tacos. It will come as no surprise to the audience, but Chef Donny Delicious knocked this one out of the park. Week after week, day after day, he continues to show up and improve his performance. The only thing growing as fast as his cooking abilities, however, is his insufferable love for himself. Honestly, had you told me when we started the show that we’d run into some overconfidence from the chef, I would not have been all that surprised. Unfortunately, this expansive self-confidence has led him to a series of small injuries including a Harvey Dent-style burn on his hand and a not insignificant-sized cut on his hand. Nevertheless, the kid has talent.
He showed up this week and put on a complete and utter clinic, making a relatively simple dish sing with the type of flavor and decadence that would make Betty Crocker proud. While the dish and overall vibes of the episode were fantastic, it’s worth noting that something seemed out of place in the kitchen this week. It wasn’t really clear at first, but it seems as though Brett (aka Coffee Guy) has turned a corner. What used to be a dark cloud of caffeine-induced rage, has suddenly morphed into a cheerful, encouraging, and overall delightful glow. It’s hard to put my finger on exactly what changed, but from my vantage point, he seems like a new person. Regardless, it was just one episode and it would be wrong of me to think Coffee Guy has turned a new leaf entirely, but it’s certainly exciting to see his potential shine through as a member of the show.
As far as the food goes for this episode, Donny nailed this dish. To take a simple mixture of eggs and sausage, and turn it into a delightful, fluffy, and savory masterpiece, shows a clear sign of growth in his culinary abilities. Also, I’d be a fool not to highlight the amazing crust he was able to form on the top of the Frittata. That thing was crunchy like a chip while still maintaining a beautiful flavor profile. Unfortunately for me (Camera Guy), that delicious crunchy crust seemed to act as some sort of heat dungeon for the molten, Mt. Vesuvius-like lava beneath it. My first bite of this Frittata felt like I took a bite out of the Earth’s core and washed it down with tabasco sauce. This, sadly, will lead to a less-than-perfect score for Donny Delicious as it’s not fully clear on whether or not he did this on purpose as a way to release some of his pent-up tension with Coffee Guy.
All in all, solid episode, a delicious dish, and good vibes all around. What else can you ask for?
